  About the chapter:

Luqman the sage was known among the Arabs for his wisdom and his proverbs and wise sayings were cited in daily conversation, in prose, and in poetry.  The chapter includes a beautiful fatherly monologue in which Luqman advises his son in the ways of success in this world and in the world to come.  The chapter also emphasizes the truth and sensibility of monotheism and the absurdity of polytheism along with the interconnectedness of the message of Muhammad peace be upon him with the messages that came before.

  Snippets from the translation:

And when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him:  "Oh my son, do not ascribe any in worship with Allah, for ascribing partners with Allah is indeed a tremendous inequity."  And we have enjoined kindness on man to his parents.  His mother bore him in weakness upon weakness and his weaning is in two years, saying:  "Show gratitude to me and to your parents.  To me is the final return.  And if they strive to make you ascribe in worship with me partners of whom you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but keep their company in this life with kindness and gentleness.  And follow the way of those who turn to me.  Then in the end, the return of all of you is to me, and I will inform you of all that you used to do."  [chapter 31:  13-15]
